I switched my auto insurance to Allstate yesterday. Part of the discount requires the use of a dongle device that tracks erratic driving and rewards avoidance of such with up to 30% discount on premium. I was reluctant at first. I was worried the device might be used to raise my premium or worse yet, justify the denial of a claim. According to the website, the data collected is never used to raise premiums. Instead, drivers are rewarded with discounted premiums for avoiding "incidents" as defined by Allstate. The incidents being measured by the device are: hard braking, hard cornering, hard acceleration. The device also uploads daily driving data (speed, miles, time of day). The data is plugged in to an algorithm that determines if I am eligible for a discount of up to 30% of my premium (collision excluded).
I live in Chicago, so it will be very interesting to see how easy it is to earn a discount. Driving around town involves dealing with other cars, taxis, bicyclists and pedestrians. Sometimes a hard brake is necessary when any of the aforementioned dart in front of me.
In spite of my skepticism, I am going to give it a try and will report on my experience. I expect to get the device in a matter of days. Stay posted for updates.
My new auto insurance policy with Allstate begins March 6, 2012. As part of a premium cost-saving scheme, I agreed to install Drive Wise, Allstate's proprietary telematic device that monitors my speed, distance traveled, hard braking and sudden acceleration all in an effort to reward "safe" driving with up to a 30% reduction in premium. These devices are a fairly new phenomenon and I am going to report on my experience using the device.
